With the month of April coming to a close, and the month of May—and the reveal of Microsoft’s new gaming console—on the horizon, here at Under The Code we’re taking this opportunity to answer two questions about the year 2013 in sports video gaming so far.
1.) Which sports videogame due for release in 2013 is your most anticipated? Why is this?
Buckeye: It started off as NCAA Football 14 but Madden NFL 25 quickly passed it. With what has been released (heavy run game focus) and what has yet to be released… this is as excited as I have been in a couple years. I think the addition of the Precision Modifier and combo moves has certainly been a major upgrade. When you throw in the run blocking being completely re-done, I think it has to be Madden NFL 25 hands down.
CoreySA: Well, since we don’t know when EA’s UFC game will release, I’ll hold that one off of my list, but it’s number one. I’d have to say my answer is FIFA 14 so far. I didn’t play any game more than I did FIFA 13, and it was my Sports Game of the Year, so it wins by default. Pretty much everything I had on my list to fix in regards to gameplay was already announced in their first reveal – making me super excited to see if they’re able to balance it properly. There is still a lot to be announced so we should be in for a treat. My backup would probably be Madden NFL 25. I think they have a lot of stuff up their sleeve this year, and I’m excited to see how improved blocking, better foot planting and a second year with Connected Careers and the Infinity Engine change the game.
NatureBoy: Madden NFL 25. I’m always excited to see what changes the game has from the year before. Plus with this edition being the 25th anniversary, I’m hoping for a collector’s edition filled with all kinds bonus features not announced as of yet.
Oblong: Being a Tiger Woods PGA TOUR guy, nothing gets my juices flowing more than the release of the new version each year. I was especially looking forward to this year’s release having got to play an early version and seeing how many community-requested features had been added to the game. One thing that the Tiger Woods PGA TOUR game always delivers on is new courses to play, some which have been on wishlists for a long time – it’s always interesting to learn their nuances.
OneEighth: Close race between NCAA Football 14 and Madden NFL 25. It has been nearly two years since I have played NCAA Football due to the fact last year’s iteration was sub-par in my opinion. The improvements made from what I have seen so far have me excited to have a collegiate football game I can fully enjoy again. On the other side of the field last year’s Madden was my game of choice and if they continue to build on that it will again be the sports game of the year for me. Even though they are basically neck and neck, I am going to have to go with NCAA Football 14 as my most anticipated.
Paakaa10: For me, it’s NCAA Football 14. Last year’s game, for a number of reasons documented so far here at Under The Code, was really disappointing to me. While NCAA Football 12 had been my most-played game released in 2011, NCAA Football 13 spent a lot of time in its case for me in 2012 compared to other sports video games which had been released. This is going to be a hugely important year for NCAA Football; based on what we’ve learned so far, the potential is there for NCAA Football 14 to once again take up more permanent residence in my PlayStation 3.
Romo Time: This is probably the single most difficult question you could ask me about in the gaming department… I have to say I give the edge to Madden NFL 25 because there seems to be a lot going on there, but I also am really ready to see NCAA Football 14 take that next step and be that dominate sports franchise I believe it can be, and I’m big into playing Online Be A Pro in NHL 14, so I’m excited about it as well.
SimFBallCritic: I would have to say Madden NFL 25, simply because Madden has the most to prove. Everyone remembers Madden NFL 06 for the Xbox 360 and with the new consoles coming out around Holiday 2013 it’s safe to say that Madden NFL 25 will be the last relevant Madden game for the current generation. Madden NFL 25 will need to be a strong representation of what’s to come for future Madden games in order to gain the communities trust going into the next generation.
ThatSportsGamer: NCAA Football 14. I’m a huge fan of the series and all of these new enhancements to the running game and option play calling have me excited to do my first Road to Glory where I will play as an Option QB. With this year’s updates it should be a nice change from the Pocket Passer that I normally play.Read More →
